Transparency and Flexibility in the Supply Chain

August 30, 2007 - Check out this article in The Wall Street Journal, August 27. Columnist Carol Hymowitz discussed recent news events that should cause executives to review priorities. The first point she made was very interesting: Make supply chain management a top priority.

The Most Critical Supply Chain Risk to Manage – Missed Sales

August 22, 2007 - Customer demand is becoming less predictable and more perishable. What I mean is this: If you don’t have what the customer wants, when they want it, at the price they want to pay for it, they will go somewhere else to get it. And the impact is not trivial, lost sales are typically lost at the gross margin level.

Location, Location, Location: Redefining an EMS’ Role in the Supply Chain

August 20, 2007 - It used to be, and is still very much the case, that an OEM would outsource its core electronics manufacturing to an EMS: Put the little parts on the green boards, and ship ‘em half way around the world to multiple hubs and locations, in order for an OEM to do the final test, pack, and ship out to various sales channels. I wonder sometimes why an OEM would consider pick, pack, and ship as a core competency?

The Next Big Challenge: The Lean Supply Chain

August 2007 - More than 50 years after Toyota started its “visual factory,” which became the basis for modern day “Lean manufacturing,” 90 percent of companies consider themselves Lean, according to The Lean Supply Chain Benchmark Report by Aberdeen Group. Frankly, I disagree with Aberdeen’s first set of findings - I don’t believe the 90 percent figure. Having spent many years in supply chain consulting, I can tell you first hand that 90 percent of companies are NOT Lean … no way! But, I do agree with the second finding - that a few have started to extend Lean into the supply chain.

NCR Corp. and redbox are two in point and each is reaping the benefits of having someone else do the manufacturing "dirty work" for them. Both companies have partnered with Solectron Corp. to manufacture either its entire line of kiosks, as is the case with redbox, or only for certain segments of its business, as NCR did.
